Master of Arts in Liberal Studies

Lehman College will be offering a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies degree program as an alternative to the traditional graduate curriculum. Students will be able to design their own set of courses from several different graduate departments. This unique program is anchored on the belief that mature and highly motivated students can benefit from a wide range of academically challenging courses across many disciplines. It also provides the opportunity for returning students, who need the scheduling convenience, to choose part-time, full-time, evening, day, or summer study options.

The liberal studies program curriculum begins with a core set of courses concentrating on the humanities, performing and fine arts, social sciences, and natural sciences. After completion of the core courses, students design a course of study reflecting a specific interest in a particular area of concentration. To complete the study, students will write a thesis in their area of interest and take a comprehensive examination.

Each student is assigned a faculty adviser with special knowledge of the student's anticipated area of concentration. In consultation with the faculty adviser, each student develops a coherent course of study that must provide a balanced, interdisciplinary selection of courses in the spirit of the liberal studies program.
