The Bachelor of Science in Education major in Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) was the first teacher preparation program offered by Macon State College. The Board of Regents, as part of an initiative to boost the number of teachers being produced by the University System of Georgia, approved Macon State's program in January 2005. Moving quickly to establish an accredited program by fall and with the support of the Board of Regents, Macon State adopted the baccalaureate degree structure already in place at North Georgia College & State University.

In 2007, the School of Education's newly-developed secondary certification tracks for biology, English, history, and mathematics majors were approved and teacher candidates were admitted into those programs. The first graduates received their diplomas May, 2009.

Fall 2009, students were admitted into the newest major, Middle Grades Education. This program received developmental approval from the Georgia Professional Standards Commission spring 2010. The Bachelor of Science in Middle Grades Education (B.S.) prepares the candidate to provide educational services for all students in grades 4-8. Students take coursework which may qualify them to be certified in special education. Candidates must select two areas of academic concentration from the following: language arts, mathematics, science or social studies. This will lead to a 4-8 teacher certification in Georgia.

October 2010, the School of Education received notification that the Unit Accreditation Board of the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) granted accreditation to the School of Education at Macon State College at the initial teacher preparation level. This accreditation decision indicates that the School of Education and its teacher preparation programs meet rigorous standards set forth by the professional education community.
