MANSFIELD, PA (02/03/10) — Mansfield University Student Government Association (SGA) President Ralph Slyster is beginning his second semester as president of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) Board of SGA Presidents (BSGP).

Slyster, a Mansfield H.S. graduate who is a philosophy/pre-law major with a minor in leadership, says the PASSHE Board is working on two major initiatives in the spring semester.

Details are still being finalized for "Keystone Kares," which is being organized in conjunction with the United Way. "This will be a day of community service that will take place across the state of Pennsylvania that will get students into their communities and partake in a variety of small service projects such as raking, mowing lawns, picking up trash, planting flowers and trees and painting fences,” Slyster said. "The ideas for the projects that the students will execute come from sign-up sheets located in the town and are generally helping out its elderly or disabled citizens."

Also in conjunction with the United Way, the BSGP will be having a Haitian Relief Effort T-Shirt Sales competition that will take place on all 14 state university campuses to help raise funds for those in need after the devastating January earthquake.

"I have not done anything more satisfying with my time," Slyster said of his involvement with BSGP. "I get excited every time I have the opportunity to work with this group. It's not often that an opportunity to set up state wide events such as ‘Keystone Kares’ or the Haitian Relief Effort arises. This is a very powerful group of young leaders and every single one of them brings a variety of resources to the table and together we are able to do some pretty amazing things. Also, being the Chairman of the BSGP, I get the chance to work with the PASSHE administration and they are very helpful with informing us about what is going on at the state level as well as helping us to become better leaders. The best thing about working with this group is the fact that all of these students are going through similar situations, and the collaborative effort and support that they all offer is reassuring as well as productive in solving issues on the respected campuses."
