The Program

Graduate Studies Program

Millersville University Department of English educates graduate students whose refined research, analytical, and writing skills enable them to advance into doctoral programs or other professional endeavors. The Millersville English Department offers two graduate degrees, the Master of Arts and the Masters of Education. In addition, the department provides curriculum that leads to Certification for students who wish to become teachers, but who do not have a degree in education or in English.

The English M.A. program features courses that emphasize the history of literature and language. The English M.Ed. combines courses in language and literature with educational psychology and pedagogy. Students enrolled in either program may enhance their educations with independent study projects and with a master's thesis. (For complete requirements, please see the graduate curriculum sheets).

Graduate students are eligible for student assistantships and have the opportunity to both assist faculty on research and campus projects and to work in the Tutoring Center Graduate assistants are not permitted to teach. Recently, students in our graduate programs have pursued employment in local schools and industries, while others are pursuing their Ph.D.s at institutions such as Penn State, University of Pennsylvania, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, The University of Texas-Dallas, and Purdue University.

Graduate students have the opportunity to participate in two English Association of Pennsylvania State University (EASPU) conferences. They may present at either the main October meeting where faculty also present papers and at a special Graduate-student-only conference held in April. To honor the accomplishment of student-scholars, the English Department also sponsors two essay awards in memory of past faculty members, the John Huzzard Award and the Danny Ducker Award.

For more information on graduate studies in English, contact the Graduate Coordinator, Dr. Alan Kelly. In his absence (over breaks), Dr. Beverly Schneller is available for advising and consultations.
