Revisions to the General Education Curriculum

After several years of study and discussion of various proposals by the Gen Ed Task Force, the Gen Ed Review Committee, and the Faculty Senate, revisions to the General Education curriculum were approved by a faculty-wide referendum on April 25, 2007. The new curriculum will be implemented for incoming students beginning in the summer and fall of 2008.

Gen Ed Curriculum Development

Gen Ed Curriculum Development. The Senate has approved documents for faculty to submit requests to recertify W (Writing Intensive) courses, to request a D (Cultural Diversity & Community) course designation, and to propose an FYI (First-Year Inquiry) Seminar. Links for the forms and instructions (in both PDF and MS Word 2003 formats) can be found in the “Information for … Faculty” section.

Purpose of General Education

Gen Ed

Consistent with Millersville University’s mission to provide a liberal arts-based education, the purpose of General Education is to provide breadth of knowledge as a balance and complement to the depth provided by the major. This is necessary for the holistic development of Millersville graduates as responsible citizens in a diverse and technologically complex, global community.

General Education Objectives

Students, working with advisors, and taking into consideration prior knowledge and experience, purposefully select courses in the General Education curriculum that meld with required courses, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, and courses in the major to achieve the following major objectives:

Foundations for Life-Long Learning
1. Students will think, speak, and write clearly.

Critical Thinking across the Liberal Arts
2. Students will demonstrate foundational knowledge of the important ideas and methods of different ways of knowing.

Connections and Exploration
3. Students will connect important ideas and methods of inquiry from different disciplines as a means of becoming holistic and responsible citizens in a diverse and technologically complex, global community.
