BA in International Studies

Major Requirements

A degree in International Studies will help provide an understanding of the complex and evolving issues that underlie world affairs. These international issues which link peoples, cultures, governments, businesses, and non-governmental groups have a profound influence on society.

International Students majors will offer students a chance to:

  • Understand Comparative Social, Cultural, Economic, Environmental, Historical, and Political Systems.
  • Become informed about the complex system that we face in a global community.
  • Develop the necessary skills needed to discuss and present their opinions and conclusions. (Qualities highly valued by employers)
  • Learn a different language.

The International Studies major emphasizes comparative social, cultural, economic, environmental, historical and political systems worldwide. Comparative studies in music, literature, religion, and education are also offered. Through these studies, students will gain a greater understanding of complex issues and develop skills necessary to discuss and present their opinions and conclusions, qualities that are highly valued by employers.

As an interdisciplinary program, the International Studies major provides students a great amount of academic choice. In addition to several required core courses, the student chooses a concentration in two of four areas: comparative societies, economic interdependence, global environmental issues and international relations. Students also select a geographic region of specialization and a foreign language. These classes come from an approved list of offerings in:

Students who pursue a degree will be required to fulfill the following:

REQUIRED CORE COURES :

  • ANTH 121 – Cultural Anthropology
  • ECON 103 – Introduction to the World Economy
  • GEOG 101 – Global Environment
  • GOVT 251 – Introduction to Global Affairs

REQUIRED INTERNATIONAL STUDIES COURSES :

  • INTL 201 – Intro. To International Studies
  • INTL 488 – Senior Seminar

CHOOSE TWO OF THE FOUR FOLLOWING AREAS (take two courses from each of the two focus areas) :

  • Comparative Societies
  • Economic Interdependence
  • Global Environmental Issues
  • International Relations

  • Europe

CHOOSE A LANGUAGE :

  • Millersville University offers Programs in French, German, and Spanish. Through study at F&M or study abroad, many other language opportunities are available.

Minor Requirements

International Studies creates a perfect blend with any major. For students working towards other degrees, a minor in International Studies will provide a global frame of reference and preparation for future work with international colleagues and global corporations. Recent International Studies minors have majored in Chemistry, Business, Communications, Foreign Languages, Geography, Government, History, Sociology and Anthropology, and Social Work.
