The Pennsylvania Governor's School for Teaching (PGST) is held annually at Millersville University, Millersville, PA. PGST, one of eight Governor's Schools of Excellence, is the first and only school of its kind in the nation. The five-week-long residential program, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, is designed for gifted and talented high school students who are interested in teaching as a career. The objectives of the program are: (1) to attract gifted/talented students to the profession of teaching, (2) to develop participants' teaching skills, (3) to examine current school practices, (4) to encourage positive attitudes towards teaching as a career and (5) to instill an ethic of community leadership.
Each year, 64 students are selected competitively from a large pool of applicants representing the 29 Pennsylvania State Intermediate Units. They are taught by teachers from all parts of the state and around the globe. The program emphasizes creative thinking, problem solving, and leadership skills. Scholars teach local school students, envision and design future schools, and develop leadership projects to be implemented in their home school districts and communities. PGST has been held at Millersville University, the site of the state's first normal school, since its inception in 1990.
