What is NU’s stance on affirmative action?

Northeastern University recognizes the benefits of having a diverse campus and proudly supports affirmative action. A memo from President Freeland sent out to the university community on Dec. 8, 2003, says it all: "One of the things that I value most about Northeastern University is its diversity."

After the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the University of Michigan Law School's affirmative-action principles in 2003, Freeland said, "Northeastern University applauds the U.S. Supreme Court's decision. ... We believe that affirmative action is a vital and inextricable part of the mission of higher education and are heartened that race can indeed be used as a factor in college admissions." Read more
