The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) is housed within the School of Health Professions, which is one of three in the Bouvé College of Health Sciences. CSD has nine tenure-track and four full-time clinical faculty members and one full-time Cooperative Education faculty member. The department employs part-time instructors to teach up to five courses in a given semester. All academic faculty members (four full, three associate, two assistant professors) hold doctorates (eight PhD, one ScD); five of the academic faculty and the entire full-time clinical faculty hold appropriate professional degrees and certifications (e.g., AuD, MS, MA, CCC-SLP, CCC-A). Academic faculty members conduct research and teach, and most apply a portion of their effort on extramurally funded research grants or contracts. Clinical faculty members focus on classroom and clinical teaching and training, while also contributing to scholarly research and dissemination of information within their profession. All faculty members are actively engaged in service to the department, Bouvé College, the University and wider community.
Programs and associated research activities in CSD have been designed to meet the department’s scope. CSD offers an undergraduate major in communication sciences and disorders, a masters in speech-language pathology, and a clinical doctorate of audiology. Along with other units, CSD is part of two interprofessional certificate programs (Early Intervention and Aging). Having the Department housed in a college of health sciences represents a unique opportunity for expanding the scope of its research and teaching activities in order to include related domains of communication sciences within the College’s health sciences mission. Additional opportunities for interdisciplinary research and education are afforded through faculty affiliations with units outside of Bouvé, including Psychology, the College of Computer and Information Sciences, and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering,

Goal 1. To advance research that is informed by needs of those with communication differences and disorders, translates to clinical practice, and improves quality of life across the lifespan.

4.1 Encourage engagement between clinical and academic faculty members, through periodic events that explore common points of contact related to different points of emphasis in professional scope
4.2 Explore co-teaching of courses, so that faculty can better learn about each other while students benefit from a diversity of perspectives within a course
