Northeastern University Housing Cancellation Deadlines

Cancellation Deadlines

First and Second Year sTudents

You are required to live on campus for your first two years at the University.

Reasons you could be removed from your assignment:

  • Co-oping farther than 20 miles outside of the Boston area
  • Study Abroad
  • Leave of Absence
  • Withdrawing from the university

If any of the those situations apply to you, please e-mail with your name, NUID number, the semester you are referring to, as well as the reason and have your adviser confirm your plans with us.

For any other reasons, please refer to the Residency Waiver Process.


If it is before the Cancellation Deadline:

You can cancel at anytime and receive your deposit back within 5-7 business days as long as you cancel in accordance with the cancellation schedule below. self-cancellation

If the Cancellation Deadline has passed:

You will lose your deposit and be assessed a percent of the term room charge based on the cancellation schedule. If you cancel your housing prior to receiving an assignment, you will be assessed a cancellation fee according to the cancellation schedule at the rate of a standard apartment double. If the cancellation deadline has passed, but can demonstrate a significant change in academic, co-op or financial circumstances, you may petition to remove this charge.

If you are co-oping further than 20 miles outside of the Boston area, studying abroad, taking a medical leave of absence or withdrawing from the University, you can cancel your housing, regardless of the cancellation schedule. As long you have written verification of your co-op (such as having your coop adviser email, you can cancel your housing assignment without penalty.


Your adviser (Financial Aid, Study Abroad, Academic, or Co-op) cannot cancel your housing contract. You must request the cancellation by e-mail to

Petition Process

Do you wish to petition your cancellation fee?

Here is a brief out-line of the process.

  1. Complete and submit this on-line form: Official Petition Form
  2. Submit the form by pressing "Submit" at the end of your petition. You can also fax your supporting documents if you do not wish to upload them with your petition, to (617) 373-8794. Be sure to include a cover page with your NUID number and label it "Petition Information."
  3. Once your petition is received you will receive a confirmation e-mail.
  4. Your petition and all its supporting information will be forwarded to the Petition Committee. This committee meets weekly (on Thursdays) to review and process petition requests. If your petition is received by 5:00PM on Wednesday, it will be reviewed with the current week's petitions. If it is received after that, it will not be reviewed until the following week.
  5. If you are required to supply more information, you will receive an e-mail requesting additional information. You will have five (5) business days to respond with the appropriate information. If you cannot obtain the information within five (5) business days, please contact, Assistant Director (Upperclass Assignments), and request more time. If you fail to produce the requested information within five (5) business days your petition will be automatically DENIED and you will be removed from the petition process.
  6. Once the committee has made a final decision you will receive an e-mail notification of your result.
