In order to provide a comprehensive introduction and overview of The N.U.in Program, the locations abroad, and Northeastern’s Boston campus, orientation is offered in three separate sessions: Pre-departure Orientation on Northeastern’s campus in July, on-site orientation once students have arrived in their host countries, and New Student Orientation on Northeastern’s campus in January.

During Pre-departure Orientation (PDO), you will spend two days on the Boston campus in July participating in a program designed to introduce you to N.U.in policies and procedures, increase your familiarity with the N.U.in locations, and meet your fellow N.U.in students and N.U.in staff. Workshops and sessions include culture acclimation, safety and security while studying abroad, N.U.in policies, academic advising, goal-setting, and team-building. You will stay overnight in a freshman residence hall and get your first taste of life on Northeastern’s campus. Towels, bedding, and meals are all provided for N.U.in students.
Dates for Fall 2016 Pre-departure Orientation sessions are below. Please note that these dates are subject to change.
- Pre-departure Orientation I: July 8-9, 2016
- Pre-deparutre Orientation II: July 11-12, 2016
Students will register for their preferred session with the exception of N.U.in Australia: USYD and N.U.in Summer participants. Due to the dates of these programs, N.U.in Australia: USYD and N.U.in Summer students will attend PDO I (July 8-9).
*PDO is mandatory for all U.S. citizens. Due to U.S. visa regulations, international students are not required to attend this on-campus orientation program. International students will receive all necessary information through our website and via email.
Parent and Family Program at Pre-departure Orientation
Your parents and guardians are invited to participate in our Parent and Family Program that takes place on Day 1 of PDO. Parents should plan to leave campus after the conclusion of the Parent Program, as the sessions planned for Day 2 are specifically for students. Breakfast and lunch are provided for all registered family members on the first day of each orientation.
Registration is required, and each PDO session will fill up on a first-come, first-served basis. Check back soon for information on how to register and a schedule of events.
What to Bring
Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes—and bring a water bottle. Evening sporting activities are offered, so those who wish to participate should bring appropriate clothing. Additionally, all students must bring the following items:
- Photo ID for housing check-in
- Unofficial or photocopied documentation of all AP/IB score reports and transcripts of all college transfer credit. We ask that students bring copies of these documents in addition to submitting the official documentation to Admissions to assist their academic advisors. They will meet with students to review their N.U.in courses and determine if any necessary changes need to be made based on AP/IB/transfer information. Please note that advisors will retain these copies for their records here at Northeastern.
- A fan, if necessary. (Please note: air conditioning is not provided in every residence hall.)

PDO Policies & Logistics
For safety reasons, once you check-in for PDO, you must stay on campus for the entire program. Please do not schedule any activities or events that will take students off campus or away from the required orientation activities.
N.U.in International Student Advisors, who will be traveling abroad with the students, will stay in the residence halls overnight and plan the evening activities.
