Thanksgiving Eve Dinner – November 22, 2006

To kick off the holiday season, Torch Scholars Program Director Meghan Allen-Eliason invited each Torch Scholar into her home for a special Thanksgiving Eve celebration.

Torch Visits Washington, DC – October 6-7, 2006

After being invited by the Manganaros to visit them at their home outside Washington, DC, the Torch scholars embark on what was for some their first airplane ride. Following the visit, the Torch Scholars explored the White House, the Capitol and other parts of the city.

Torch Scholars Reception – September 28, 2006

At the University's newly opened Alumni Center, the Torch Scholars Nadia Alvarez, Joey Bordieri and Ana Hidalgo told their stories of overcoming exceptional odds before being accepted into Northeastern.

Classes Begin – September 4, 2006

The Torch Scholars finally begin their first week of classes the week of September 4.

Barbecue on Centennial Common – September 1, 2006

Following freshman convocation, President Aoun greeted freshman, including Torch Scholars, at the annual barbecue on Centennial Common.

Torch Pizza Party – August 9, 2006

To further strengthen bonds between each other, Torch Scholars take a break and enjoy pizza together.

Fenway Park – July 28, 2006

During special pre-game ceremonies, the Boston Red Sox officially welcomed and introduced the Torch Scholars and Torch Program staff on the field.

Meet the Manganaro Family – July 26, 2006

The inaugural class of 11 Torch Scholars met the family of Anthony Manganaro, E'67, who funded the program and made possible college educations for each one.

Xhibitions Kitchen – July 19, 2006

Senior Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs Philomena Mantella, treats the Torch Scholars to a special Italian lunch.

Culture Night – July 19, 2006

As a diverse group of students, each Torch Scholar explained their heritage and culture. For example, Ana Hidalgo and Odalis Polanco showed off their dancing talents, which they learned as children in the Dominican Republic. Foxboro, Massachussets native Joey Bordieri shared some stories of his interactions with members of the New England Patriots, including playing video games with Tom Brady.

Project Adventure – July 12, 2006

To strengthen their team-building skills and sense of group identity, the Torch Scholars went to Project Adventure in Beverly, Massachusetts, where they traversed a ropes course.

Orientation & Scavenger hunt – July 10, 2006

The Torch Scholars introduce themselves to NU faculty members and explored their new campus home while competing against each other in a scavenger hunt.

Move In Day – July 9, 2006

In early July, the inaugural class of Torch Scholars arrived on campus, moving into Stetson Hall West and meeting each other for the first time. The Scholars embark on a rigorous six-week summer immersion program.
