Programs & Classes

The library continues to serve as popular destination and community gathering place. More than 370,000 people attended programs for children, teens and adults this past year. In addition, we offered more than 13,000 technology classes during the year.

Awards Galore

The Orange County Library System (OCLS) is an award-winning one. OCLS has been honored with numerous awards this past year and beyond. Recognized as a national and international model when it comes to innovation, the Orange County Library System sets the bar high and is the gold standard when it comes to public libraries.

Future Projects

In April 2012, a $1 million donation was announced, the largest single gift in the library's history. The generous gift will be used to create The Dorothy Lumley Melrose Center for Technology, Innovation & Creativity. The center will house labs for visual arts, film, digital media, graphic design, simulation and audio engineering on the second floor of the Orlando Public Library. The books from that space were relocated to the third and fourth floors of the Library. There will also be a fabrication lab that will allow patrons to make anything from 3D models to jewelry. The center has an anticipated opening date of early 2014.

The Orange County Library System keeps detailed statistics to ensure we are providing customers with quality products and services in an efficient manner. With more than 4.3 million visitors through our doors this year, the library is constantly evolving to meet the needs of our loyal customers.

Fiscal Year 2013 was marked by major events and new additions. In an effort to provide our users with current and easy-to-access content, the library added several new vendors to the extensive list of e-reading services we offer. Axis 360 allowed the library to participate in a program that provides titles from Simon and Schuster as well as access to Penguin Random House titles to our users. Additionally, Freegal Movies & Television and hoopla allows users to download and stream movies and episodic television series. These new services helped increased digital downloads by 34% from last year's numbers.

In addition to offering new digital services, the library still offered up its distinctive and assorted programming for children, teens and adults. The library offered more than 21,000 programs throughout the year. Part of this included the celebration of Viva Florida 500. This statewide initiative resulted in more than 6,000 attendees at our programs throughout the year. Along with programming, the library offered over 1,000 technology classes a month. The Technology and Education Center added various classes from the Adobe Creative Suite during the fiscal year in an effort to provide more current content to our customers as well as prepare for next year's opening of the Dorothy Lumley Melrose Center for Technology, Innovation & Creativity.
