Two of the most unlikely friends left a lasting mark on Florida and the literary world for decades to come. Dr. Anna Lillios explores the complicated friendship between Pulitzer Prize-winning author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings and celebrated author Zora Neale Hurston in her book Crossing the Creek. Using interviews from individuals who knew both authors, and the surviving letters between both women, Dr. Lillios discusses how racism played a part in their friendship and their independent successes, the truth about whether or not Hurston really offered to be Rawlings’ maid and the ways in which both authors wrote about the friendship in their own novels. Hear Dr. Lillios discuss her award-winning book at the library. Book sale and signing follows program.
*This special event, brought to you by the Friends of the Orange County Library System, is FREE and everyone is invited.
