If you've updated to iOS7 and are unable to open an e-book through the OverDrive app, be sure to update to the latest version of the app (v3.0.2). After updating the app you may be prompted to re-authorize the app with your Adobe ID. Refer to the iOS section of this Help article from OverDrive Support for assistance.


Clearing your temporary Internet files may solve the issue:

Using Internet Explorer

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Del to open the 'Delete Browsing History' window.
  2. Click Delete to clear your temporary Internet files.
  3. Don't worry about which options to pick, just use the defaults.

Using Firefox

  1. Windows: Press Ctrl + Shift + Del to open the 'Clear Recent History' window. Mac: Press Command + Shift + Del to open the 'Clear Recent History' window.
  2. Select Everything from the drop down box.
  3. Click Clear Now to clear your temporary Internet files. Don't worry about which options to pick, just use the defaults.

Using Chrome

  1. Windows: Press Ctrl + Shift + Del to open the 'Clear Browsing Data' window. Mac: Press Command + Shift + Del to open the 'Clear Browsing Data' window.
  2. Select the beginning of time from the drop down box.
  3. Click Clear browsing data to clear your temporary Internet files. Don't worry about which options to pick, just use the defaults.

Using Safari

  1. Windows: Press Ctrl + Alt + E to open the empty cache window. Mac: Press Option + Command + E to open the empty cache window.
  2. Click Empty to clear your temporary Internet files.

One other recommendation from OverDrive has is that you install the Google Chrome browser. They state that they've found the new site function the best within Google Chrome.


When I try to transfer a WMA audiobook from OverDrive to my iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad I get the message "Some of the items in the iTunes library were not copied..." What should I do?

If you're unable to transfer WMA Audiobooks to your iOS 5 device using OverDrive Media Console for Windows, please download and install the latest version of OverDrive Media Console (v 3.2.0.6 or newer) and the latest version of iTunes (v 10.5.1 or newer) and try again.


How can I tell which version of the OverDrive Media Console I have?

Open the OverDrive Media Console and click on Help and select "About OverDrive Media Console..." from the menu items. You can read the version number of the OverDrive Media Console from the pop-up box that appears.


I can't find the audiobook I just transferred to my iOS 5 device (iPhone/iPad/iPod touch) from OverDrive Media Console. Where should I look?

OverDrive Media Console creates a playlist for each WMA Audiobook transferred to an iOS device. Look for a new playlist named after the book you just transferred. Please note that WMA audiobooks will no longer be listed in 'Audiobooks' on your iOS 5 device. There is a potential for the audiobook parts to not be automatically added to the created playlist for that title unless you update your device to iOS 5.01 or newer.

If you haven't updated to version 5.01, you may need to connect your device to your computer, open iTunes and drag the part listed under Books over to your playlist.

You may also be able to locate all of the parts of the audiobook by using the Search function of your device.


How do I return/check in an audiobook early?

You can return OverDrive audiobooks early, using the OverDrive Media Console app (v.2.4 or later) for iPhone/iPad, Android, Blackberry, and Windows 7:

From the OverDrive Media Console app:

  1. From the bookshelf, tap the + button next to the title that you want to return or delete.
  2. Tap Delete to display the return options.

How do I return/check in an e-book early?

Depending on the device you're using, or the format of the e-book, there are several options for returning a title early.

How do I return e-books using Adobe Digital Editions? (Also use this method to return Adobe PDF e-books.)

  1. Open Adobe Digital Editions.
  2. Select the 'Library View' icon (in the upper left corner). The Adobe Digital Editions library is displayed.
  3. Under the 'Bookshelves' heading, select 'Borrowed'.
  4. Click the e-book you want to return.
  5. Click the 'Item Options' arrow (in the upper left corner of the selected e-book).
  6. Select 'Return Borrowed Item'.
  7. Click 'Return' to verify that you want to return the e-book. The e-book is returned.

How do I return e-books using OverDrive Media Console for Android v2.3 (or newer)?

To return e-books from the Library screen…

  1. Tap and hold the e-book you want to return. The title menu is displayed.
  2. Tap 'Delete' to display the return options.
  3. Tap 'Return and Delete'. The e-book is returned and deleted.

How do I return e-books using OverDrive Media Console for BlackBerry v2.3 (or newer)?

To return e-books from the Library screen…

  1. Select the e-book you want to delete.
  2. Select Menu > Delete to display the return options.
  3. Select 'Return and Delete'. The title is returned and deleted.

How do I return e-books using OverDrive Media Console for iPhone/iPad v2.3 (or newer)?

  1. Swipe across the e-book you want to delete. A 'Delete' button is displayed next to the title.
  2. Tap 'Delete' to display the return options.
  3. Tap 'Return and Delete'. The e-book is returned and deleted.

How do I return e-books using OverDrive Media Console for Windows Phone 7?

  1. On the Library screen, swipe across the e-book you want to delete. A 'Delete' button is displayed next to the title.
  2. Tap 'Delete' to display the return options.
  3. Tap 'Return and Delete'. The e-book is returned and deleted.
  4. Tap and hold a title to show the context menu.
  5. Select 'delete' to display the return options if the selected title is not expired.
  6. Select 'return and delete'. The title is returned and deleted.

How do I return a Kindle Book?

You can return a public library book for Kindle from the Manage Your Kindle page in Amazon.

  1. From your Amazon account, go to 'Manage Your Kindle.'
  2. Move your mouse over the 'Actions...' button next to the public library book you want to return.
  3. Select 'Return this book.'
  4. When prompted "Are you sure you want to return this Library Loan e-book?" select 'Yes.' The title is returned.

I accidentally downloaded the wrong format for my device...what should I do?

Unfortunately, we're unable to change the format of a checked out title or title placed on hold. If you have checked out and downloaded the wrong format, you may return the book early which will open a checkout slot in your OverDrive account and enable you to check out and download the correct format of that title if it's available.


I'm a reciprocal borrower, can I check out e-books and downloadable audiobooks?

The OverDrive service is reserved for resident card holders of Orange County. If you are not a resident card holder of Orange County and would like to use the OverDrive service, you may be interested in applying for a fee card with the Orange County Library System. Why is my account blocked from using OverDrive?

There are several reasons why you may be unable to use your library card to sign in to OverDrive:


There is a known issue with iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch) and ePub e-books. If you are reading an ePub title on an iOS device and the book pages stop loading, please try restarting the OverDrive Media Console app.

How to Restart the OverDrive Media Console App on Your iOS Device:

  • Double tap the Home button.
  • Long press the OverDrive icon until it begins to shake.
  • Tap the red circle in the upper left corner to close the app.
  • Follow steps 1-3 to close any other running apps that are not needed.

Once the app is shut down and opened up again, the app should run properly. If these steps do not solve the issue, try completely powering down your device:

  • Hold down the Home button and the Power button on the top of the device.
  • When the red slider appears, turn off the device.
  • Turn it back on and reopen the OverDrive Media Console.

I don't see a question and response that matches the issue I'm having with my iOS 5 device and OverDrive WMA audiobooks. What can I do?
