Department of Ocean and Mechanical Engineering Assistant Professor Position

The Department of Ocean and Mechanical Engineering at Florida Atlantic University invites applications for a Tenure - Track Assistant Professor Position. Applicants for the position must have earned a doctorate in Ocean or Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field that contributes to the strategic initiatives of the department. The department has a strong research and educational background in autonomous marine vehicles, robotics and controls, underwater acoustic imaging and communication, materials (nanomaterials/nanomechanics, composites, and corrosion), fracture and fatigue, physical oceanography, helicopter dynamics, hydrodynamics and acoustics of marine vehicles, alternative energy (solar, wind and ocean), combustion, and structures. The departmental research facilities are located on the main campus at Boca Raton and a state-of-the-art research facility called Sea Tech at Dania Beach. The department is seeking candidates who will complement the existing research activities in one or more of the emerging or rapidly developing areas of national interest including but not limited to all aspects of energy systems, ocean engineering, bioengineering, and nanotechnology. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop research collaborations with various FAU centers of excellence and affiliated institutions including the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, Southeast National Marine Renewable Energy Center (SNMREC), Scripps Research Institute (Scripps Florida), and Max Planck Florida Institute.

It is expected that the successful candidate will teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels commensurate with his/her research interests. Overall, successful candidates must have demonstrated their potential for excellent teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels, and for developing a strong externally funded research program with emphasis on competitive extramural funding. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, as judged by faculty and students, are essential. A competitive start-up package will be available for this position.

The Department of Ocean and Mechanical Engineering consists of twenty two faculty members from diverse backgrounds who are committed to excellence in research and education. The department has a thriving undergraduate population of approximately 600 students and a graduate student population of 100 (65 MS and 35 PhD).
