Transfer Opportunities - Transfer Timeline

Whether you plan to earn a degree or just take a few classes before you transfer to another institution, it's never too early to begin planning for a smooth transition. Contact Us to develop a plan to achieve your transfer goals.

The Virginia Community College System (VCCS) recommends the following general transfer timeline:

4 Semesters Before Transferring:

  • Investigate possible transfer institutions offering your intended program (s) by your desired features (i.e., cost, location, size, service, distance learning).
  • Utilize advising, faculty, counseling and career center personnel/ resources to assist you with choosing your major.
  • Learn more about general education requirements and lower-division components in the curriculum.
  • Begin looking for scholarships, discounts and other ways to meet cost.

3 Semesters Before Transferring:

  • Visit advising, faculty, counseling and career center personnel/resources for assistance.
  • Attempt to decide which transfer institution best suits your needs.
  • Declare your intent to transfer to your academic advisor.
  • Use four-year institution's transfer guides to assist you with course selection.
  • Familiarize yourself with potential institutions' academic calendars and deadlines.

2 Semesters Before Transferring:

  • Continue selecting courses that transfer appropriately within program of study.
  • Submit your applications for admission and financial aid (along with all of your official transcripts).
  • Once admitted, complete any specific scholarship and housing applications (as appropriate).
  • Talk with advisors and academic professionals at your community college and transfer institution and keep abreast of changes in program requirements.

1 Semester Before Transferring:

  • Complete transferable coursework and, if applicable, apply for your associate degree (and Graduation).
  • Send official transcripts (again) at the end of your last semester before transferring and verify that you do not possess any financial/ administrative holds.
  • Attend new student orientation sessions (if possible) or use online orientation tools. Be sure to request maps, directories, tour information and other essentials.
