The Riverside County Office of Education will be honored in the 31st Annual Golden Bell Awards program of the California School Boards Association.
RCOE was recognized in the “Assistance to School Districts” category for the Come Back Kids Dropout Recovery Program under the direction of Kenneth M. Young, Riverside County Superintendent of Schools.
The highly respected Golden Bell Awards will be announced and presented at a special ceremony during CSBA’s Awards Luncheon at the Marriott Hotel in San Francisco on Saturday, December 4, 2010 from noon to 2:00 p.m. The event is held in conjunction with the California School Boards Association’s Annual Education Conference.
The goal of the RCOE Come Back Kids Drop Out Recovery Program is to reduce the number of dropouts in Riverside County by providing accessible school settings county-wide where a caring, productive, and resource-rich environment enables dropout students to re-engage in school and graduate. Partnerships are formed with Work Force Development, Community Colleges, County Probation, Foster Youth Centers, community agencies, and local school districts to develop opportunities for youth. CBK meets the needs of districts by providing alternative diploma or General Education Development Test (GED) programs for their fifth-year seniors and drop out students.
The program has been recognized for its innovative approach to helping county offices capture drop outs, using existing resources and the expertise of their own Alternative Education staff to build a comprehensive program. CBK is exemplary in its impact on high school graduation rates not only for the county programs but also for school districts who can now “recode” lost students as graduates or completers, thus reducing their dropout rates. In its first year, CBK graduated 26 students and by its second year quadrupled that number.
Students from any of the 23 school districts may enroll in CBK at any of the 14 RCOE sites. Students who meet all graduation requirements established by the RCOE Board of Education or pass the GED join their peers in a yearly graduation ceremony. Many CBK graduates are the first in their family to earn a high school diploma.
The CSBA Golden Bell Awards program promotes excellence in education by recognizing outstanding programs in school districts and county offices of education throughout California. The Golden Bell Awards reflect the depth and breadth of the education programs necessary to address students’ changing needs. The goal of this awards program is to contribute to the development and evaluation of curriculum, instruction and support services.
