Educational Services | Youth Development

There is a need to create an environment that supports students with resources and instructional strategies that provides the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual support needed to learn.  These resources should apply to instruction and practices in the classroom and the non-instructional opportunities that schools have throughout the school day to guide and influence student behaviors.

Young people need both challenging content and supportive environments to achieve academically.  Influences such as caring families, discipline, education, and social skills are important to healthy development.  The Search Institute has identified 40 building blocks that youth need to grow up healthy, responsible, and caring.  These assets provide a powerful paradigm for mobilizing schools and communities to take positive action for youth.

It is important to include activities and strategies that involve youth in decision making, use youth as resources to implement programs, and build youth assets and strengths that result in improved academic performance and lower-risk behaviors.

The Riverside County Department of Education sponsors workshops in the area of positive youth development and the asset-building approach for school personnel.
