Federal grant will provide SIGnificant help for the most at-risk students

Riverside County Superintendent of Schools Kenneth M. Young unveiled plans how the $5.4 million federal School Improvement Grant (SIG) awarded to the Riverside County Office of Education today (August 24, 2010) will benefit more than 3,500 students who attend school at the 15 alternative education community school sites operated by the RCOE across Riverside County. The award was approved today by the California State Board of Education.

“The Riverside County Office of Education is implementing one of the four improvement models required by the California Department of Education to transform our alternative education community school program. We have every reason to believe this model will significantly improve the quality of education our county’s most At-Risk students are currently receiving due to a lack of funds. The SIG funding will help hundreds of students graduate from high school and become productive citizens that otherwise were on a pathway to failure,” said Young.

The federal School Improvement Grant is awarded to schools to improve academic achievement. Students who attend community schools lack high school graduation credits, have been expelled from traditional schools, or are on probation. The grant is awarded over a period of three years. The grant will be used to help increase student attendance, enhance classroom instruction and technology, improve school safety and expand student’s readiness for the workforce. None of the SIG funds are for new administrators.

The state identified 188 schools eligible for SIG grants, and approximately $415 million will be used statewide in the next three years.
