Megan Rodgers

Kent State at East Liverpool Senior Megan Rodgers thrives under pressure. Rodgers' ability to be successful both academically and civically stems from her commitment to get involved, stay connected and revitalize her community. As president of Kent State East Liverpool's Environmental Club she has gained leadership skills and learned the importance of staying focused and organized. In addition, she is a member of the East Liverpool Lions Club and a volunteer at the Beacon of Hope.

Recently, Rodgers was recognized by the East Liverpool/Wellsville chapter of the NAACP with a one-year membership. This membership was in recognition for her hard work and involvement in community projects. Rodgers was honored to receive the membership saying "it is very gratifying to work alongside individuals who are dedicated to bettering our community." For her volunteer efforts, along with her essay on the importance of integrity, the group named her the 2011-2012 recipient of the Tom Jarrett NAACP Scholarship Award.

"I'm very appreciative of the award," she said. "Receiving this scholarship will help alleviate some of the financial obligations during my senior year at Kent." Winners must be enrolled at Kent State East Liverpool and have completed twenty or more credit hours. Rodgers is one of only two youth coordinators that help oversee the NAACP's youth garden at Thompson Park. The garden is maintained to demonstrate to children where the food bought at the grocery store comes from. "It is very rewarding to see the children generally interested in what we have to teach them; it is a very fulfilling project."

Rodgers plans to continue volunteering even after she earns her Bachelor's of Biology with a concentration in Organismal Biology from Kent State University. This area of study enables students to focus on whole organism studies while maintaining a great deal of flexibility in course choice. Biology majors may seek employment immediately after graduation or continue their education in a wide variety of graduate and professional programs.

Once she receives her diploma, Rodgers plans to continue her education in pursuit of her overall goal of practicing ophthalmology.  As she continues on, she won't forget where she started. Rodgers appreciates Kent State East Liverpool's community oriented atmosphere.  "Here you're not a number, like you are at larger universities," she said. "The faculty and staff know your name, and are dedicated to helping you achieve your goals."
