Summer Research Competition 2011: THE LOUDA GRADUATE RESEARCH AWARDS
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry invites all graduate students (MS and PhD) to a friendly research competition over summer this year. The first prize in this competition is sponsored by a very generous donation to the Department from Drs. Deborah W. and J. William Louda.
The Challenge:
1) Use the 2011 Summer semester (May to August) in the best way possible to advance your thesis research.
2) Overcome a roadblock that has held back your progress in the spring, solve a particular problem, or just get a lot of work done.
3) Write a short summary (2 pages max) of your research achievements and submit it by Friday 26th August, 2011. Explain what you achieved between May and August, how it advanced your thesis research, and what hurdles you had to overcome.
4) Have your thesis advisor certify that the research summary details only work performed between May and August 2011. This is important as we do not want to bias the competition towards senior students who may have substantial data prior to the summer period.
Selection Process:
1) An award committee will review the short write-ups and select the best three submissions.
2) The three finalists will each give a short 15 min presentation to the Department at 3pm on Friday 2nd September, 2011.
3) All faculty and graduate students present in the audience will cast a secret vote for "Best Graduate Researcher".
4) Votes will be counted on the spot so that the winner can be declared the same day. The ultimate winner will receive a certificate and prize ($).
Submission Information:
1) Download and fill in the 2011 Summer Research Competition Cover Sheet
2) Write up a summary of your research achievements. Do not exceed two pages (Font 11 or larger, page margins at least 0.75 inches). You may append 1 page with figures, graphics, schemes, etc.
3) Save all documents as a single PDF file and send via email to erezler@fau.edu by 11.59 pm Friday 26th August, 2011.
