The University of South Alabama Outdoor Adventures staff members believe that there is more to your college experience than dorm rooms, diners, and “dead brains” during finals. Our staff is passionate abut the outdoors and sharing their passion with others. Whether you are a greenhorn camper, a weekend warrior, or the host of a wilderness survival show, Outdoor Adventures has something for you. If you are new to outdoor recreation, don't worry! Our staff is knowledgeable and will provide all the instruction and gear needed for your trip. Select the trip below to find out more information or to register. If you have a trip idea, let us know! 2015 Fall Trip Series
Deer Island Mississippi Barrier Island Kayaking: January 30-31
Deer Island is the closest Mississippi Barrier Island to the coast. Come with us as we hit the gulf! We will explore the peacefulness and the solidarity of camping on a completely undeveloped island. On Saturday we will be paddling the full length of the 4.5 mile island so we can get as far from civilization before making camp at the far southern end. Along the way we will see many different species of birds, vegetation, and perhaps even some dolphin. Don’t miss this chance to remove yourself from the world for a day!

Providence Canyon Backpacking: February 20-21
Providence Canyon is considered one of Georgia’s seven natural wonders. Known as the Little Grand Canyon, it has received national recognition because of its unique geological structure. The canyon, up to 150 feet deep, has a variety of vivid colors that pop and shine making this a great place to visit. The fact that it has an endangered species of flower also makes it a photographers dream. This is a great hike and a beautiful area to explore with Outdoor Adventures!

Outdoor Adventures hits their first whitewater of the season on the Okatoma. The Okatoma is part of the Pascagoula river system and features some class I rapids. The river is a small river and provides ample rope swings, beaches, and safe rapids to play in and practice your whitewater skills. Even if a capsize happens the Okatoma is not very deep and is fun to swim and play in. You might even think about capsizing on purpose if it is hot! Come join us!

Time for a throwback to a simpler time with Outdoor Adventures! We will be departing for an overnight horseback riding trip through the forest of the Florida panhandle. On Saturday you will be given a horse and it will be your companion as it carries you to our campsite for the evening. Sunday after a relaxing night’s sleep you will hope back on your buddy and finish the trail. Come saddle up with Outdoor Adventures. Meals are included!

Sipsey Wilderness area offers some of the best backpacking in Alabama. Located in the Northwest corner of the state we will be hiking along streams, bluffs, and through creeks. Sipsey wilderness area is also home to the state champion yellow poplar tree. The tree is 25 foot in diameter and the first night we will camp under it. This is one of the best backpacking spots in the southeast. Come with Outdoor Adventures as we head up and experience the beautiful Sipsey Wilderness Area.

Join us for our full moon paddle in the Mobile-Tensaw Delta. We will leave from the Bluegill restaurant and paddle north on the Apalachee River. After a short ways we will enter Whiskey Ditch, a small creek that makes its way through the local vegetation until opening up into a small pond in the middle of the marshes. We will pass by a variety of animals and plants while being guided by the light of the full moon.

Come and experience some class I and II rapids with Outdoor Adventures. We load up the van on Saturday and head up to the rapids! We will put in on the Coosa River just below Jordan Dam and ride the rapids. If whitewater isn’t your thing, don’t worry! There are parts of the river that are flat and make for a nice float. The river is damn controlled so we will know just what we are getting into! We will be back Saturday evening.

Check out the top and the bottom of the Florida Panhandle on this wet and wild adventure. We will spend Friday and Saturday paddling the beautiful Econfina creek. This creek is fed by 11 natural springs which guarantees crystal clear water the entire paddle. On Saturday we will leave the creek and drive to Saint Andrews Park in Panama City and camp on the beach. Sunday we will wake up and snorkel the jetties and rock formations all while enjoying the warm Florida sun.

Come and find the best that the Smokey Mountains has to offer. On the first day of our adventure we will raft section three of the Chattooga River and camp beside its water. The next day we will finish a challenging section four of the river which features several class III and Iv rapids. After the rapids we will explore the hot spots of the Smokey Mountains such as Cade’s Cove and Clingmans Dome. We will finish out our trip with backpacking on one of the Parks most scenic trails, the Big Creek Trail Loop. The Big Creek Trail follows an old railroad grade along a beautiful creek and summits Mount Sterling. Mount Sterling is a great place to camp complete with a lookout tower to take in our last night in the great Smokey Mountains.
