Dr. Yaguang Xi is an assistant professor of oncologic sciences at the Mitchell Cancer Institute. His laboratory focuses on the discovery and validation of novel biomarkers associated with tumor progression, metastasis, therapeutic response, and prevention using high throughput genomic technologies including microarray, real-time PCR and Luminex xMAP technologies. Currently on-going projects are aimed at exploring the important roles of microRNA in human colorectal cancer, breast cancer, leukemia, and osteosarcoma.

MicroRNAs are a set of non-coding small RNA molecules. The total number of microRNAs is approximately 1,800 but they regulate up to 1/3 of human genes at post-transcriptional and/or translational levels. MicroRNA has been recognized as a set of critical regulators to involve many essential biological events including development, cell growth, differentiation, apoptosis, and tumorigenesis. Being motivated to translate their accomplishments from the bench into the clinic, Dr. Xi’ team is studying important functions of microRNA and expects to find a cure for cancer in the near future.
