Laboratory experiments on the
"weir-flow-damage mechanism" for coastal roads

The USA CTEREC recently performed full-scale lab tests of this typical "weir-flow-damage mechanism" in a flume at the Texas A&M University 's Haynes Coastal Engineering Laboratory. A concrete road was built on a sandy embankment to simulate a coastal road. The road was then flooded with water to simulate a storm induced overtopping event. Three runs were conducted with two different headwater conditions. On the third run, a buried revetment was tested as a countermeasure to prevent road failure due to the "weir-flow-damage mechanism." Preliminary results are positive; i.e. this is the damage mechanism causing pavement damage in hurricane overwash and this buried revetment on the downstream shoulder prevented pavement damage.
