Our program offers five positions for each of the four years in the required training program. Funds are provided by the department for these residents to attend meetings, seminars and courses, including a six-week course in radiologic pathology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. Four weeks paid vacation is allotted per year (including one "meeting" week), and we have established education, maternity, bereavement and sick leave policies.
During the initial six months of the residency, residents are exclusively at the Medical Center, concentrating on rotations needed for call coverage (ultrasound, body CT, neuroradiology, fluoroscopy, and plain film). Also, during this time, they are introduced to angiography. Residents are not able to take vacation during their initial angiography rotation. Afterward they rotate through our four facilities. Residents are introduced to nuclear medicine in the Spring of their first year and to mammography and MR during their second year.
Our one-hour conferences are held at noon and 4:00 p.m. each day. These conferences include weekly Grand Rounds, a monthly resident curriculum meeting, an "Interesting Case of the Week" conference presented by the residents and supervised by a faculty member, and lectures by faculty members in a two-week rotating cycle, covering all sections of radiology. In addition, residents are provided free admission to the annual Southern Radiological Conference held each January in Point Clear, AL.
Our library is housed on the third floor of the Mastin Building at the Medical Center. It contains over 1,500 texts, CDs, and videos. Current subscriptions to the major radiologic journals are also maintained. The first floor of the Mastin Building contains the hospital's medical library. In addition, the Biomedical Library and general library at the University of South Alabama Library are available. Reference books are kept at reading stations for use in the work areas.
Call responsibilities are clearly divided between the junior and senior residents on-call. The senior resident covers the outlying hospitals via teleradiology and is responsible for emergent procedures. The junior resident on-call covers the Medical Center only. Two dedicated on-call pagers and dedicated on-call sleep rooms are provided with teleradiology capability, and a float system for post-call coverage is in place.
Salary is maintained at the southern mean and an educational fund for books and educational expenses is provided. This fund can be used to cover the purchase of texts, licensing fees, AFIP tuition and other meetings, and physics/written/oral examination expenses. A 10% discount is available through the University Bookstore. The department provides for residents to attend the Southern Radiology Conference each January in Point Clear, AL. In addition, reimbursement is made for commuting between our facilities for conferences. Personal pagers are provided by the department.
