Canto accepts short fiction, poetry, prose and visual art. Unless stated otherwise in the written submission guidelines distributed each year, short fiction must be 2000 words or less and poetry 100 words or less. Canto will not accept work that is offensive to any group of persons, is inflammatory in nature, or incites hate toward any group. Canto will only consider submissions that follow its written submission guidelines.

To ensure fair and impartial evaluation, Canto will operate by blind review: the identity of the author or artist will not be known by reviewers. Editors and staff members may submit their work for consideration, but they will not review their own work. The comments of reviewers will remain confidential; Canto does not provide critiques for works that were not accepted for publication. Following publication, all rights revert to the contributors.

Only students currently registered at the Stark Campus of Kent State University are eligible to submit their work or to become staff members.
