First Step FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions about First Step

Why do I have to take the math placement assessment?

Math placement is an important step for new Kent State students since all students need to complete a college level math course to fulfill graduation requirements. The purpose of the placement process is to assess your current level of proficiency in math and place you into an appropriate math course based on your competency and chosen major. Your academic advisor will review your placement with you during First Step.

Can I wait to take the math placement until after I finish my senior year?

We highly recommend that you do not wait. Registration for fall classes begins in March and the earlier you attend First Step, the better selection of courses you’ll have. Plus, the first 300 First Step participants receive a free Kent State t-shirt!

I started taking the ALEKS math placement but didn’t finish. How do I get back into ALEKS?

Your session probably timed out. A Kent State Stark staff member will need to reset your session. We will need your name, Kent State ID Number and Kent State Email. Call Bobbi Groves at 330-244-3244 or Eleanor Kuder at 330-244-3252 to have your session reset.

I don’t have a computer at home - or - I don’t want to take ALEKS at home. Can I take it at Kent State Stark?

You can come to the Academic Success Center to take the ALEKS math placement. We have set up specific days for students to take ALEKS on-campus if they choose. Visit the Testing Services website for available dates. If you have questions, call the ASC at 330-244-5040. The Academic Success Center is located in the lower level of the Campus Center.

What about those other placement options. Do I have to take them?

Your reading and English placements are determined by your ACT test scores and will be discussed with you during First Step. Math is the only placement assessment required before attending First Step. You are welcome to take the foreign language placement now if you are planning to major in a foreign language, or if you think you might take a foreign language class during your first semester. Students whose majors require CHEM 10060 will need to take the ALEKS Chemistry placement assessment in July. Detailed chemistry placement information will be given at First Step.

How will I know where I placed?

Your academic advisor will explain all of your course placements to you at First Step.

I plan to be a music major. What else should I do?

Incoming music majors must complete the online theory placement evaluation and attend an Audition Day before attending First Step. Visit the Music Placement & Auditions website for instructions on the music theory placement evaluation and to make a reservation for an Audition Day. If you are from out of town, try to attend the June 26 Audition Day, which is also a First Step day. Contact Laurel Seeds at lseeds@kent.edu with questions.
