Certification Classes

Certification Classes:

  • Open to everyone, including the public.
  • Faculty, staff and students should contact Stacie Humm about program discounts.
  • Each certification class or workshop is hosted by the Recreation & Wellness Center, but registration and payment information is done by the certifying body. See individual links.
  • All classes are held at the Recreation & Wellness Center unless otherwise noted.
  • No classes will be held when the university is closed due to weather emergencies, holidays or during spring break.

Summer 2014

AFAA KICKBOXING CERTIFICATION
Saturday, July 19: 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.

This workshop brings standards and guidelines to today's hottest workout. Apply the principles of biomechanics, exercise physiology and injury prevention to learn the safe and effective way to lead dynamic KickBoxing classes. Learn how to properly throw a punch, techniques for kicks, use of equipment, combination-building and more.

AFAA PRIMARY GROUP EXERCISE CERTIFICATION
Sunday, July 20: 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.

For group exercise instructors whose training and educational background has prepared them to take the AFAA Primary Group Exercise Certification exam, this course is a review of AFAA's Basic Exercise Standards and Guidelines, anatomy, exercise science, exercise evaluation and exam criteria. The program format includes practical application of group exercise, study guide overview and question and answer sessions. The day concludes with written and practical exams.

AFAA PERSONAL TRAINER CERTIFICATION
July 25 - 27
Friday, July 25: 1 - 9:30 p.m.
Saturday, July 26: 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Sunday, July 27: 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.

AFAA's fully accredited (both exam* and program**) and globally recognized certification program is designed to equip those seeking to become Personal Trainers with the competencies needed to design safe and effective exercise programming for the apparently healthy population. Facilitated by an experienced and degreed fitness professional, the workshop will review and provide practical instruction in anatomy/kinesiology, fitness assessment, program design, nutrition and other critical areas prior to the proctored administration of the included written and practical exams. 1-3 months of pre-study is required (depending on experience).
