Student Leadership Academy

Student Leadership Academy is designed to help you develop valuable skills your future employers are looking for: communication, motivation, goal setting and presentation skills. If you're looking to build your resume, meet new people and show that you have more than just a good grade point average, then Student Leadership Academy is for you. No previous leadership experience is necessary.

FALL 2014 SESSIONS: SEPTEMBER 15 - NOVEMBER 6

Two Tracks Available:
  • Personal Leadership
  • Career Development
How It Works:
  • Personal Leadership sessions are offered on Mondays and Thursdays
  • Career Development sessions are offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays
  • Sessions in both tracks are offered at Kent State University at Stark and Stark State College
  • You can choose to attend sessions in one specific track, our you can choose sessions from both tracks to meet your own personal needs
  • Kent State Stark students are permitted to attend sessions at Stark State College, and vice versa
  • Sessions are 50 minutes long unless otherwise indicated

Certifications:

  • Attend 4 of 8 sessions in a specific track to receive a specialized certificate
  • Attend 8 of 16 sessions in both tracks to receive a general certificate

Description: SLA participants should attend this session to find out about facilitators, session topics and locations, in addition to program expectations. Students who attend this session will receive resource materials. This session will be offered four times, but participants will only get credit for attending this session once.

Description: If you are interested in serving others or to want to learn how to “pay it forward" and even volunteer in your community, this session is for you! Come learn about our community partners, how you can help and even the leadership qualities you possess.

Description: Calling all those who believe in keeping their mind and body strong while juggling the demands of work, family and school. Come to this session to learn easy exercises you can do to improve your mood and feel in control.

Description: Budgeting for now and later can be overwhelming. This session will help gain a better understanding of how to put the power of saving and budgeting to work for you.

Description: Come learn about the important role you can play as a leader from one of Stark County’s judicial leaders, Aletha Carver. The session will focus on key points from the book “The Power of Introverts.”

Description: We all have our own sense of style, but do you know your “leadership” style? We will explore the type of leaders you have the potential to be, what that means for group projects and how you interact with others. You can be a benefit to everyone; you just have to know your style.

Description: Dealing with conflict within the workplace is inevitable and shouldn't be a negative experience. Learn new skills to manage communication during conflict situations and experience ways to meet a team goal with a group activity.

Description: Being a leader is a fulfilling experience, but it comes with personal and professional challenges. This session will introduce you to common issues that leaders face. Communication, boundaries, perceptions and reputation are all part of the leadership package which you will be introduced to.

This 90-minute session is designed to give you insight and response options when encountering an active shooter and how to make critical decisions during times of extreme stress.
