Common Ground

On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina flooded the United States’ Gulf Coast region, killing or displacing thousands of people. A group of students at Kent State Stark saw a huge need and wanted to find a way to make a difference. In response, they used their creativity as currency to produce the publication, Common Ground: Rebuilding Brick by Brick. Copies of the publication were sold around Kent State Stark for donations. The small volume showcased writing by students, staff and faculty, and through the combined efforts of editors and authors, they were able to rebuild a common ground of hope and support for those in need.

Inspired by their efforts, a new group of students at Kent State Stark’s Writing Center have revisited the concept of Common Ground in a hope to continue the tradition of assisting those in need. Spring 2010's edition will be for the benefit of the Domestic Violence Project, Inc., located in Canton, Ohio. In the future, it will be an annual publication which will benefit a different charitable organization each year. Though our focus will be on local organizations, it will not be limited to our own backyard. Katrina has shown us all that a sense of community can be expanded nationwide, and as an annual publication, Common Ground will be able to respond.
