Civil Service Commission | Overview of Public Safety

Governor Chris Christie • Lt.Governor Kim Guadagno

Entry-Level Examinations

The Entry-Level Public Safety Examination Process provides candidates with job opportunities in a wide variety of job titles such as: Police Officer, State and County Correction Officer, Sheriff's Officer, Fire Fighter, and many other public safety related titles.

Law Enforcement: In order to be considered for employment in an entry-level law enforcement position, candidates must pass a written exam called the Law Enforcement Examination (LEE). Those who pass will remain in the eligible pool for two years. The pool of eligible candidates that result from the LEE will be used to fill positions for law enforcement titles in all Civil Service jurisdictions. The LEE announcement was posted on July 1, 2016 and closed on August 31, 2016.

Announcements for Parole Officer Recruit and Parole Officer Recruit Bilingual in Spanish and English were posted on June 1, 2016 with a June 21, 2016 closing date.  An announcement for Correction Officer Recruit was posted on July 1, 2016 with an August 31, 2016 closing date.

Testing for the LEE began on October 22, 2016 and concluded on December 17, 2016.  Examination results were issued on March 22, 2017.  Candidates may access their examination results online by clicking the link on the Civil Service Commission's website: http://www.state.nj.us/csc/ and selecting “Law Enforcement (LEE) Candidate Score Results”.

Paper notifications containing test scores were also mailed to each candidate’s address on file.  Eligibility notices for passing candidates may only include final averages and veteran status because the entry-level law enforcement testing process places candidates who pass the test in an eligible pool.  There is no eligible list or rank until a certification is requested by an Appointing Authority (AA) for a hiring agency and the certification is issued by the CSC.  Once a candidate is certified, instructions will be sent regarding the next steps in the employment process.

Fire Fighter: The Entry-Level Fire Fighter announcement closed on August 31, 2015. Testing took place in October and November, 2015. The 2015 Entry-Level Fire Fighter lists issued on March 3, 2016. Physical performance testing will be conducted on a pass/fail basis at the time of certification. This testing will continue, as the need arises, for the duration of the eligible lists.

Promotional Examinations

The promotional selection process in New Jersey's Civil Service System is designed to provide all applicants with an equal opportunity to compete for a promotional position. The examination serves as one objective tool in this process. Test scores will be used to identify qualified candidates and to generate a list of eligibles to be considered for appointment by each jurisdiction.

Law Enforcement: Promotional examinations for Law Enforcement titles are announced and given according to established schedules for each title group. For many of these promotional announcements, Orientation Guides are also provided. These guides are designed to give specific information regarding the testing process and to help candidates prepare for their upcoming examination. Click here for more information.
