Troy University to honor armed forces in ceremony on March 14
TROY, Ala. – Troy University will honor members of the armed forces, veterans and those who have died while in service to the country during a ceremony at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 14. The ceremony will be held adjacent to the Trojan fountain on the Bibb Graves Quadrangle on the Troy Campus.
The ceremony will feature the presentation of the Colors by the University’s Army ROTC Color Guard, the Pledge of Allegiance by Student Government Association President-elect Joe Hutto, the National Anthem performed by Ms. Sheila Jackson of Troy and Taps performed by Troy University student Caleb Baxley.
Special remarks will be made by Lt. Col. Ivan Merritt, Air Force ROTC; Maj. Karl Krievins, Army ROTC; TROY Senior Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Dr. John Schmidt, retired colonel, U.S. Marine Corps; and Capt. W. Dave Barron, U.S. Navy (ret.). Bobby Templin, campus minister of the Christian Student Center, will deliver the benediction.
Troy University has a long history with the military, and along with Tuesday’s ceremony, the University is collecting the names and addresses of TROY students, alumni or family members currently serving in harm’s way. Mrs. Janice Hawkins, first lady of Troy University, said the idea behind the project is to have the opportunity to send words of encouragement and appreciation, as well as care packages.
“I have a real heart for the men and women serving this country and the sacrifices they make,” Mrs. Hawkins said. “These brave men and women hear through so many sources that their sacrifice is not appreciated. I want Troy University to send a clear message of encouragement and appreciation to our troops.”
Those wishing to submit the name of a TROY alumnus or family member serving the military overseas should contact the Troy University Alumni Affairs at 334-670-3318 or e-mail information to alumdev@troy.edu.
