Troy University honors alumni chapters
TROY, Ala. – Seven Troy University alumni chapters and one distinguished alumnus were honored during the University’s Alumni Association’s seventh annual Spring Reunion Dinner on March 11.
The dinner was the culmination of weekend reunion events for TROY alumni and friends held in conjunction with the University’s Irish Week festivities.
The highlight of the dinner was the presentation of the University’s Distinguished Leadership Award to Alabama Attorney General Troy King, a 1990 TROY graduate. The Distinguished Leadership Award was created to recognize the achievements of TROY alumni and friends who have distinguished themselves through exemplary work, philanthropy, leadership and service to their profession, community and alma mater.
The work and involvement of local alumni chapters also was honored.
“Great universities are measured by the pride and support of their alumni, and we have the greatest alumni on earth,” said Faith Ward, director of alumni affairs at TROY. “We currently have 43 alumni chapters, including two international chapters – one in Russia and one in China. The Spring Reunion Dinner is an opportunity for us to celebrate and honor the hard work and dedication of these chapters.”
According to Ward, chapters vie for honors throughout the year, receiving points for their efforts to recruit new students for the university, exhibit TROY spirit through involvement in and promotion of University events and further the mission of the University through a variety of activities such as providing scholarships.
The Emerald Coast Alumni Chapter received the top chapter award presented by the University’s Alumni Association – the Chancellor’s Award for the Most Outstanding Alumni Chapter. The award was accepted by chapter officer Keith Sims.
The Autauga County Alumni Chapter claimed the “We Are TROY” Award, which is given to the alumni chapter that demonstrates the most school spirit. The Autauga County chapter was formed less than a year ago.
Five chapters received the honor of Outstanding Chapters. Those honored were: the Greater Birmingham Chapter, the Troy University Dothan Chapter, the Troy University Montgomery Chapter, the Elba Chapter and the Crenshaw County Chapter, which had received the Chancellor’s Award for the past three years.
In addition, seven new members were inducted into the Golden Trojan Society during the event. The society was formed in 2003 to honor TROY alumni of 50 years or more. Those inducted were: Totsye Johnson Conner, James B. Corbitt, Evelyn Hartzog Henley, Annie Mae Logan, Virginia Roberts Maddox, E. Jeanette Rhoades Slown and Allene H. Snider.
