Johnson to provide expert advice to Air Command and Staff College

TROY – When the military needs an expert in distance education it turns to Troy University to find one.

Dr. Sallie Johnson, Troy University’s eCampus director of instructional design and educational technologies, has been appointed to a staff position at the United States Air Force Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base. Under the arrangement, Johnson is “on loan” to the military for two to four years and will serve as a subject-area expert during the creation of Air University’s first online master’s degree.

“I will still be working for Troy University, just on loan to the Air Force,” she said.

Johnson will be advising in the areas of best practices in teaching and learning theories, educational technologies and instructional design of the courses for the new master’s program, according to Dr. Bart Kessler, dean of distance learning for the college.

The ACSC’s distance learning master’s degree will be a 34 semester-hour program. Upon successful completion, students are awarded a Master of Military Operational Art and Science Degree. The program will consist of 11 courses that explore modern USAF operations and leadership. In March 2006, Secretary of the Air Force Michael Wynne and Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. T. Michael Moseley authorized the creation of the program, which is expected to begin classes in June 2007 for USAF majors and majors-select.

“Both my husband and my father are retired from the Air Force,” Dr. Johnson said. “This is a way that I can give something back and serve my country.”

Johnson, former dean of distance learning for the University’s Troy Campus, is an internationally recognized leader in distance learning, curriculum development and technology innovation.
