International Education Week focuses attention on global environment at TROY

TROY – An international festival and the formal introduction of the Confucius Institute at TROY highlight a week of activities aimed at promoting internationalization at Troy University.

International Education Week, a nationwide week designated to showcase the benefits of international student exchange and cultural diversity, is Nov. 17 – 21 at Troy University and begins with an international soccer tournament Nov. 15-16.

“We want to educate our students and the community about international study and the benefits of international education and exchange,” said Marie Frigge, an international student advisor who is coordinating the week.

Normally a sold-out event, the International Student Cultural Organization’s ISCO Festival is Friday, Nov. 21, in the Trojan Center ballrooms. The festival features international cuisine and entertainment by some of TROY’s more than 700 international students.

Dr. Scott Nokes, an assistant professor of English and ISCO faculty advisor, said the event is about TROY’s international students showing their gratitude.

“The international festival offers our international students the opportunity to show the appreciation they feel for the hospitality this community has shown them,” he said. “It has been an important part of the annual calendar of the University for more than 25 years and, in many ways, defines what our University is becoming and the importance that the city of Troy is developing in the global community.”

Tickets for the ISCO Festival may be reserved by calling 334-808-6146.

Another highlight of the week is official introduction of the Confucius Institute at Troy University. The Institute is part of a global network of more than 204 Confucius Institutes in 50 countries, 44 Confucius Institutes currently in the United States, dedicated to the promotion and development of Chinese language education, and cultural and business exchange with the People’s Republic of China. The Institute facilitates engagement with China in ways that strengthen the understanding, opportunities and bonds between the people of America and the people of China.

A gala luncheon on Nov. 21 will mark the dedication of the institute. Scheduled to speak are TROY Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins Jr., Mr. Tang Shengling, president of Hebei Normal University of Science & Technology, TROY’s co-sponsoring partner, and Mr. Yan Xueqian, deputy director of the China Youth Center.

Other events include an International Fair from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19 on the Quad that features national displays, international cookies, tea and coffee tasting and the announcement of the winners of the International Photo Contest, sponsored by the Office of International Programs for all TROY students.

At 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20 in the Hawkins-Adams-Long Hall of Honor, guest lecturer in biology, Dr. Dennis del Castillo Torres, of the Terrestrial Research Institute of Investigations of the Peruvian Amazon, will provide a lecture on “Deforestation, Livelihood and Climate Change in the Tropics.” Dr. Torres will also bring a lecture on Friday, Nov. 21 at 1 p.m. in the Math and Science Complex room 124, entitled “Biodiversity Conservation in the Peruvian Flooded Forest.”
