Dr. James F. Vickrey, Jr

Dr. James F. Vickrey, Jr. is professor of speech communication. He joined the University in 1991 from the University of Montevallo where he served as president from 1977-1988.
Vickrey has taught at Auburn University, the University of Alabama, Florida State University, the University of South Florida and the University of Montevallo where he served as president from 1977 to 1988. He also has served as reading clerk of the Florida House of Representatives, the assistant to the executive vice president at Florida State University, the assistant to the president and director of university relations at the University of South Florida and the executive assistant to the chancellor and director of public affairs of the State University System of Florida.
Vickrey earned his bachelor’s degree in English from Auburn University, where he graduated first in his class and Student Government Association president in 1964. He received his master’s degree in speech from Auburn University in 1965 and his doctorate in rhetoric and public address from Florida State University in 1972. Vickrey also holds a law degree from the Thomas Goode Jones School of Law and has also studied law at the University of Alabama School of Law and leadership and management at the Harvard University Graduate School of Business.
In addition to his experience in education, Vickrey also has practiced law and is still active in the Alabama Bar, and for the past 20 years, has reviewed films on television and radio and served several terms on the Alabama Film Commission. He currently hosts a commentary on rhetoric and cinema and rhetoric and society for the Southeastern Public Radio Network. He has authored dozens of scholarly and “popular” articles and several locally printed books.
