Notetakers

In order for you to perform the duties of a note taker for a student with a documented disability in your class, you must understand the following:
  • You will need to complete a form supplied by Student Disability Services (SDS).
  • Student Disability Services will give you two-part paper for note taking. The purpose of this specialty paper is to enable you to take notes for the student with a disability at the same time you are taking notes for your own use. We will supply this paper to you free of charge. When you see yourself running low, please stop to get more paper. OR You can take notes on your own paper and SDS will copy your notes.
  • You will need to label each day's notes. Student Disability Services asks that at the top of the notes you write the date of the class and the name of the class. Please number the pages.
  • At the end of each day's class, you will need to bring the notes to the SDS office in the Library. If you are unable to get the notes to SDS immediately after the class, please get the notes to the office as soon as possible. We expect that each day's notes will be turned into SDS before you leave campuses for the day. If you need to make other arrangements, it is your responsibility to contact the SDS office.
  • It is the student's responsibility to get the notes from SDS.
  • YOUR DAILY ATTENDANCE IN CLASS IS KEY TO MAKING THIS A SUCCESSFUL PROGRAM. If you miss a class, SDS asks that you obtain the missed notes from someone in class.
  • If you see that you will be missing more than one or two class sessions, you will need to contact Elaine Shively in the SDS office, (330) 675-8932. We will make other arrangements for those days.
  • If you decide to drop the course in which you are a note taker, you will need to see Elaine Shively in the SDS office immediately. If the student for whom you are taking notes drops that class, you will be informed by mail.
  • Note taking Services at the Trumbull campuses of Kent State University is a paid position. You will be paid $40 at the end of the semester. If the student with a disability drops the course before the midterm mark, you will receive $20.00.
  • If the SDS office receives any comments or concerns from the student receiving your notes, Elaine Shively in the SDS office will contact you. At that time a determination will be made as to the quality of the notes.
  • The SDS office reserves the right to terminate the services of any note taker.
