CLEP Testing
Kent State University awards academic credit for examinations offered by the College Level Examination Program (CLEP). The examination results are reported as scaled scores. The tests that Kent State accepts are listed here with their scaled score cut-off, university course equivalent, and credit hours. Credit is granted for each score reported at the scaled score cut-off and above. No credit is granted for scores reported below the scaled score cut-off.
Students should consult their Undergraduate Catalog and an academic advisor for further information regarding the applicability of CLEP credit towards specific degree requirements.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
Students may not take CLEP for any course:
- which they have audited
- in which they are currently enrolled
- in which they have previously enrolled and earned a grade, including: Withdrawal/W, A-F,S/U,Y/Z,IN,IP,N/F or S/F
Students who have already received credit for one level of coursework in a subject field in which knowledge is sequential or accumulative, may not receive academic credit by means of CLEP for a prior course in that sequence or for a course in a lower sequence.
Students pursuing a baccalaureate degree may attempt up to 30 hours of CLEP, APP (Advanced Placement Program), and CBE (Credit by Exam) combined. Students who wish to take more than 30 hours may petition their college dean for a waiver of this limitation. Students who have earned more than 30 hours of APP and/or CLEP credit before attending Kent State University will be granted the credit, provided such credit meets normal Kent State standards.
You will receive your examination results immediately after the test. Check your "candidate score report" and the KSU cut-off to determine if you passed. If you indicate Kent State as a score recipient, Academic Services will also receive an official score report in approximately two weeks after the test. This report will be submitted to the Records Office for evaluation and for official posting to your academic record. (BE ADVISED THAT THIS COURSE CREDIT WILL NOT BE POSTED TO YOUR KENT STATE ACADEMIC RECORD UNTIL AFTER YOU HAVE ENROLLED AT KENT STATE UNIVERSITY). It is recommended that you review your academic record to ensure proper credit has been recorded.

-
Students may obtain registration materials from Academic Services by using the e-mail form below, by mail, or by phone. Students must register at least four (4) weeks prior to a test date. Early registration is required since capacity is limited. The CLEP registration form can be downloaded here; please be sure to read the balance of this page for registration dates, fees, and the return of the registration information.
-
The fee for each test is $115. Students are required to submit two separate payments, one payable to CLEP for $80, and one payable to KSU for $35. There is an additional fee of $10 for the optional essay. The $35 fee payable to KSU MUST be paid at the time of registration to reserve a testing time, is non-refundable, and non-transferable. The $80 CLEP fee can be paid in advance or on the test date. Payment to CLEP can be made with a check, a money order, or online with a credit card. Tests taken in different months require separate fee payments and registration forms. Military personnel are required to pay only the $35 fee to KSU.
-
Return registration materials with payment to:
Elaine M. Shively, Coordinator of Academic Services, Kent State University at Trumbull, 4314 Mahoning Avenue NW, Warren, OH 44483-1998.

Because the check to Kent cannot accompany a fax, we will NOT accept registrations sent via fax.
-
Once the Academic Services administrator has scheduled your test date, your confirmation will be sent via mail. This confirmation will indicate the test date, time, and location (the examination is normally given in room 130, across from the Computer Center, in the back of the Classroom-Administration Building). You must present two forms of signature-bearing identification (one of which must contain a photo) to the test administrator on the day of your examination.
