What is SOAR?
SOAR is Kent State University at Tuscarawas’ first-year orientation, advising and registration program. It's how new first-year students (freshmen) register for fall and spring classes. College can be an exciting and challenging time for you and your family, so we've developed SOAR to help you make a smooth transition to life as a college student.
Who Attends SOAR?
SOAR is required for all new first-year students (freshmen) who will begin at Kent State Tuscarawas in the fall and spring semesters. Transfer students are not required to attend SOAR and should make an individual advising appointment to register for classes. Transfer students should schedule an advising appointment by calling 330-339-3391.
What is Covered During SOAR?
SOAR is a one-half day program (9 a.m. - 1 p.m. or Noon - 4 p.m.) that includes:
- First semester course placement
- Meeting with an academic advisor
- Registering for Fall/Spring classes
- Receiving your Kent State FLASHcard ID
- Financial Aid / Scholarship Information
- Graduation Planning System (GPS) training
Plan your day accordingly so that you can attend SOAR for its entire duration. SOAR is considered an excused absence for high school seniors and participation letters for Guidance Offices can be provided.
When Does SOAR Take Place?
SOAR is offered several times per month beginning in March and/or November. You are encouraged to choose the earliest SOAR date available to get the best selection of classes.
How Do I Register for SOAR?
After you've been admitted, you will receive an official Welcome Letter. Follow the instructions carefully in your letter. Before you can make a reservation for SOAR, you will be required to take the ALEKS online math placement assessment---detailed in your invitation---and complete the admissions application, ALEKS Assessment and COMPASS Assessment (if required). Please check to see if these items are checked on your Dynamic Checklist.
