Birmingham – circa 1972 from the EPA Photo Archives

This picture from the Environmental Protection Agency photo archives, was shot on a summer day in 1972.  Daylight was so obscured by pollutants that some street lights had turned on automatically. It was a terrible picture for several decades…and the citizens of Birmingham and surrounding areas suffered the health consequences.  Although much has improved since the 1970s with the passage of the federal Clean Air Act much still remains to be done.

UAB is pleased to host the educational symposium based on its commitment to research, healthcare and technology. UAB does not support any political views related to this initiative.
