Center for Exercise Medicine
E-mailThe UAB Center for Exercise Medicine was established by the Board of Trustees of The University of Alabama on February 4, 2011. The vision was to cultivate an environment that establishes UAB as the nation’s leader in exercise medicine research and education. UAB is among the first of major academic medical centers to establish such a center. The work of the Center is focused on improving the health and well-being of children and adults of all ages through interdisciplinary research, the training of future leaders in science and healthcare, and community education based on clinical research findings.

There are several active, exciting exercise medicine studies being conducted by Center Members including: combating Parkinson’s disease with high intensity exercise, exploring optimal exercise prescription dosing to restore muscle and mobility function in adults 60 and older; decreasing the risk of metabolic diseases in patients with spinal cord injuries; endurance exercise to improve symptoms and quality of life in asthmatics; and exercise training to improve reproductive and metabolic health in women who suffer from polycystic ovary syndrome.
