  • AAALAC Site Visit

    AAALAC International Site Visit

    March 26-30, 2018

What is AAALAC? The Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALACI) is a private, nonprofit organization that promotes the humane treatment of animals in science through voluntary accreditation and assessment programs. The AAALAC International accreditation program evaluates organizations that use animals in research, teaching or testing. Those that meet or exceed AAALAC standards are awarded accreditation. Why is accreditation and the site visit important? - Accreditation demonstrates excellence in the Animal Care and Use Program and impacts your funding! - Accreditation ensures the highest quality of care for animals in our program. - Accreditation is looked upon favorably by regulatory agencies and other institutions. - Accreditation is required by some funding sources/sponsors in order to receive grants. What to expect during the inspection? - A team of site visitors from similar institutions or with specific subject matter expertise will be visiting campus and inspecting UAB's animal use program for one week. - Areas of interest include housing and procedure space visits, protocol and record review and compliance, assessment of SOPs and staff training, general practices and procedures as compared to accepted research and veterinary practice.
