It is important that you prepare your computer to be configured properly while using Blackboard Learn. Please use the information below to make adjustments to your computer.
There are five main sections to verifing that your computer is properly configured - Browser Setup, Java Check, Blackboard Collaborate, MS Office, & Plug-ins.
Blackboard Learn is a platform that relies upon available Internet browsers to open a page, view HTML, allow a tool to function and access content. It is critically important that you configure your browser properly so it will work with Blackboard, allowing you to benefit more from the online experience.
If you pass all checks listed below, you should be able to use the main features of Blackboard.

If this check fails, refer to the Browser Settings Guide for instructions on enabling Cookies for your browser.
If this check fails, refer to the Browser Settings Guide for instructions on enabling Popup Windows for your browser.
This check works by trying to download an image through the specified port. Port 80 is the standard web (http) port.
No Java Support.
If you see nothing in the box above (or just a gray box) then Java functionality is not available.
The official UAB campus supported version is 1.7.45. Other versions may work, but if you're experiencing problems with Blackboard, you may try uninstalling and reinstalling Java 7 Update 45 from the Java Website.

Collaborate will be the online classroom solution for UAB as of Fall 2013. Much like Wimba, Blackboard Collaborate is a platform of tools that provides synchronous video and audio interaction, display, and collaborative tools for online and blended courses. This system is being used on a pilot basis on some UAB courses and there fore you may be asked to attend sessions using Collaborate.
UAB is currently using version 12.5 of Blackboard Collaborate. We provide a Configuration Room that you can use to test your connection, settings, and configure your audio. Click here for the Collaborate v12.5 Configuration Room.
Microsoft Office is the UAB campus supported office document software and is required for all documents submitted within your distance accessible courses.
Microsoft Office is a suite of applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access (for creating databases). In addtion to continuing availability of Microsoft Office and Windows products through the B&N UAB Bookstore, students/faculty/staff can now download these and more Microsoft products online.

Plug-ins are third party applications that enable extended functionality to your browser.
Important Note: The optional plugins are for needed for playing some audio/video content in some courses. It is recommend that you have at least one current media player installed so that you can access audio/video content in your course.
