• New repair station at the center of bike safety event

All the tools needed to perform basic bike repairs and maintenance are included in a new bike-repair station located outside Blazer RLC on the Green by the Commons. The station is one of the first student-led projects implemented through the UAB Sustainability Investment Fund.

The launch is part of UAB’s Bike Safety week, Nov. 9-13, which will highlight education and services available through UAB and on its campus to faculty, staff and students.

On Friday, a number of activities are scheduled on the Green 11 a.m.-1 p.m.:

    • Representatives from Redemptive Cycles will teach people to use the repair station and also provide information about its services.
    • The first 100 people with UAB ID who bring their bike and register it with UAB Police will receive kryptonite U locks from UAB Sustainability.
    • Campus Rec’s Outdoor Pursuits will provide information about its bike trips and bike-rental program.
    • See some of the new ZYP bikes that can be shared at locations around campus.

The repair station was proposed in the inaugural round of awards made through the Sustainability Investment Fund by engineering student Jeromy Huang, who had two projects selected. The board awarded $1,300 for this project, and $5,000 for the addition of more functional bike racks on campus, which will follow soon, according to UAB Sustainability Coordinator Julie Price.

  • Surveys to guide planning for electric cars, bikes on campus
Answers to these informal surveys will help UAB Sustainability evaluate the feasibility and best locations for electric car-charging stations and improvements to bike infrastructure. The surveys will be live until Sept. 10.
  • New lights in Bartow Arena save money, improve fan experience
Halide light fixtures in Bartow Arena were replaced with solid-state LED fixtures — an upgrade expected to save the university more than $35,000 annually in electricity costs.

Campus Maintenance recently replaced 84 halide light fixtures in Bartow Arena with 32 solid-state LED fixtures — an upgrade expected to save the university more than $35,000 annually in electricity costs.

The improved quality and reduced energy costs made the decision to install LED lights in the arena an easy decision. “The new lighting solution is another major step in further enhancing the in-arena experience for our fans and making Bartow Arena an even better place to play,” said Matt Winslett, engineering manager for Facilities Division’s Energy Management.

“Projects like these are essential to realizing our vision of incorporating sustainability into all areas of university life,” said Julie Price, coordinator of UAB Sustainability.

“The Bartow lighting project is one of UAB’s most recent efforts to find the smartest solutions for saving energy on campus,” Price said.

  • Put ink cartridges in campus mail instead of the landfill
UAB employees can recycle used toner and ink cartridges by dropping them in Campus Mail. UAB will manage collection and recycling efforts and use the proceeds to fund sustainability projects.
