Visiting Gainesville

Information sessions and campus tours are provided by the Office of Admissions at 10 am and 2 pm, Monday through Friday at the UF Welcome Center located in the new UF Bookstore and Welcome Center on Museum Road.

The University of Florida Health Science Center (HSC) is closely affiliated with Shands HealthCare, part of the University of Florida Health System. Eight hospitals participate in this system including the academic hospitals Shands at UF with 630 beds in Gainesville and Shands Jacksonville with 696 beds in Jacksonville, Florida. Together with clinical programs and services across all HSC colleges, the UF&Shands partnership is dedicated to providing quality healthcare to the citizens of Florida and to advancing the practice of patient care.

Parking and information kiosks are located at: SW 2nd Avenue just west of SW 13th Street (closest to admissions office) and Stadium Road, just east of North-South Drive, just south of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. Visitor parking is also available at the Health Science Center. Campus Visitors may obtain additional information from the university police offices on Newell Drive.

Accommodations are available at the Reitz Union Hotel in the center of campus, the UF Hilton Hotel & Conference Center and through the Alachua County Visitors & Convention Bureau.

Gator Parents

As your child becomes a Gator, you too are becoming a vital part of the Gator Community. At the University of Florida, we strongly believe that family members provide crucial support for the new experiences a student will encounter during college. The beginning of a college career often brings changes in relationships with family and friends. Welcoming, understanding and adjusting to these changes is an exciting challenge for all involved.

There are several resources for Gator Parents and families throughout the Division of Students Affairs. Specifically, the Office of New Student Programs in the Dean of Students Office exists to help new students and their families with this transition and growth. There is even advice available from experienced UF parents and families as well as a suggested book list. In addition, the Office of the University Registrar has numerous resources for parents, including information about academic dates, confidentiality of student records and a reference guide for parents.

The Gator Parents and Families Association is open to parents and family members of current UF undergraduate students. The Family Fund helps to support programs designed to assist student learning, explore career possibilities and integrate students into service and leadership organizations.

With a child at UF, a trip to Gainesville can be a great way to share in the Gator experience. Each fall, the University of Florida hosts Family Weekend, a fun-filled, two-day series of events for new Gators and their loved ones. Commencement, held in the spring, summer and fall, serves as the culmination of academic careers and the beginning of new pursuits.
