What is Google 2‐Step Verification?
Google 2-Step Verification (also known as 2-Factor Authentication) is similar to most multi-factor
authentication processes. It is a means by which a system login and authentication process is

Why should UK users of Google services enable 2‐Step Verification?
UK users of Google services should enable the Google 2-Step Verification feature because it makes the
Google login process stronger. Even if an imposter/criminal cracks, guesses or steals your password, s/he
will not be able to login without access to your verification codes. There are several ways to receive these
verification codes and you will get to choose the means (e.g., mobile phone, desk phone, etc.)
How do I install or sign up for Google 2 step verification?
Either search for “Google 2 Step Verification” or click on the following link and select Get Started:
www.google.com/landing/2step/. The wizard will walk you through the setup process.
It is strongly recommended that you print off your back up codes and make sure you have a good
secondary email account or phone number (to use for backup purposes.) This will benefit you if ever
have problems with your primary Google account or primary mobile device.
Do I have to pay extra for Google 2‐Step Verification?
No, there is no additional fee to use Google 2-Step
Will UK pay for my data connection?
No, the University of Kentucky will not pay or reimburse you for your cell
phone minutes or data plan.
Will Google 2‐Step Verification cause a lot of bandwidth to be used?
No, the entire authentication process will
not use much bandwidth at all. When a verification code is sent to a mobile phone, it will be sent as a text
message (i.e., SMS).
Will Google 2‐Step Verification work when I am off campus?
Yes, Google 2-step verification will work
anywhere you have your device with Google Authenticator installed.

Exchange Email Limits
Recent hijacking of campus employee email accounts have led to email spam of over 10,000 addresses per hour. This deluge of spam damages the University's reputation and causes specific sites to reject all mail from @uky.edu. Therefore, beginning July 1, 2013, University of Kentucky Exchange users will be limited to sending email to 250 recipients in a 24 hour period.
Email recipients are calculated differently for individual email addresses versus distribution lists. When an email is sent to ten email addresses and another email is sent to twenty, a total of thirty recipients have been emailed (even if some recipients were sent both emails). However an Exchange Distribution List with 10-250 email addresses only counts as one recipient. When the email recipient limit is exceeded, an UK employee will receive the following error message: "This message can't be sent. This email account has reached the university email recipient limit of 250 recipients in a 24-hour period. Questions can be directed to the University of Kentucky Service Desk at 859-218-HELP (859-218-4357)."
Reports indicate only a small number of UK employees email more than 250 recipients per day. These employees can request a higher limit of 1000 recipients per day. If an employee needs to email more than 1000 addresses per day a Listserv or mailing service should be considered, but immediate needs to email a large number of recipients can also be requested. These requests should be submitted to the Service Desk at 218Help@uky.edu or 859-218-HELP (859-218-4357).
