Professor Nelles came to UMass Dartmouth in 1995 and has taught over 29 different courses for the English Department. Currently, he serves as Director of the Spotlight Program for high school students. Professor Nelles has also served as Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Director of UMD Honors programs, among other administrative duties.

Along with his service at UMass Darthmouth, Professor Nelles serves as an Editorial Consultant for American Literary Realism and The Ohio State University Press. He has also published more than 100 books and articles on a wide range of topics, from James Joyce, Chaucer, and Jane Austen to Van Morrison and Confucianism and Taoism. Two of Professor Nelles' forthcoming articles, "The Sonnets" and "Troilus and Cressida" will be published in The Facts on File Companion to Shakespeare.
