Dr. Cheyne specializes in 19th Century French drama. Her research interests include Romanticism, identity construction, institutions, the intersection between aesthetics and politics, race, colonialism, gender, translation, and editing. She is currently engaged in preparing an edition of Lacour's Pyracmond, ou Les Créoles for the series Autrement mêmes with L'Harmattan, and of Pixérécourt's Le coffre de fer for Garnier-Classiques. In addition, she is involved in translation projects that include Balzac's Le Nègre and selections from the Affaire des Colonies (1789-1794) documents. She teaches language courses at all levels, advanced courses in composition, conversation, culture, and literature. Recently she has offered special topic seminars focusing on race and desire in French Restoration fiction, the construction and construction of value in French culture, the battle over Romanticism and Classicism in French theater, and language and power.
