The Department of Foreign Literature and Languages supports honors work in French or Spanish at the 200 level and beyond. For more information on honors coursework, contact an individual faculty member within the department as well as the Honors Program website.

The Department especially enourages majors with senior status who have a cumulative average of 3.5 to undertake honors work. The student must take a three-or six-credit independent study on a specific topic. Honors work includes an extensive reading list and the student must present a substantial term paper which will be evaluated by a faculty committee. The term paper must earn a grade of at least an A-.

Each year, outstanding foreign literature and language students are also recognized at the University Honors Convocation. Students may also complete the University Honors Program. To achieve this, they must maintain a suitable grade point average and complete 30 of their credits at the honors level (either by enrolling in designated honors courses or developing their own program within a course). Upon graduation, successful candidates receive the distinction of "Commonwealth Scholar."

Outstanding Spanish majors may be invited to join the Mu Phi chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, the national Spanish honor society.

Outstanding French majors may be invited to join the Xi Zeta chapter of Pi Delta Phi, the national French honor society.
